EVANDALE

A little piece of Scotland, amongst dark loamy soiled pastures and meadows of the high-country above Launceston.

Evandale

A little piece o’Scotland in the hills above Launceston, set beside a bend in the South Esk River; a gem of a place the lustre of which is not diminished by its proximity to the airport.

We spent a relaxed morning browsing the Saturday Markets, finding an invitingly friendly atmosphere, some nice things to eat, and a goodly collection of barn-find tools.

There are two pubs to choose from: the Clarendon Arms on the corner of Russell and Scone Streets; and the Prince of Wales at Nile Road and Collins Street. We’ve had lunch at the Prince. Lovely food, generous portions, great service. We rate both pubs quite well.

It’s only a short drive from Launie to Evandale, quicker if you take the main highway, but more rewarding if you take the slower route along Relbia Road; and make a little detour at Josef Chromy Wines Cellar Door.

An interesting man was Mr Chromy, whose life story that reads like a post WWII novel. Splendid wines and great food served in a beautiful setting, this is well worth adding to your list of Must Do’s in the north of the island.
