NORTH WEST & WEST COAST

For mine, the North-West begins somewhere around Devonport, where the car ferry Spirit of Tasmania connects this island with the larger one across Bass Strait; and extends along the Bass Highway across the top of the island through coastal townships and farmland to the pastural grandeur of Woolnorth or the rugged, windswept beauty of the West Coast.

This is also a region of wild hills and mountains, shaggy with forests watered by rains blown ashore from the Southern Ocean, or deep in snow from Antarctic storms. Within these mountains are found places the beauty of which render words inadequate to describe them, and which more than amply justify the arduousness of the journey to see them.
